I didn't see this coming

If you asked me a year ago what I thought I needed to become a good software engineer, my answer would be very simple. Learn as many programming languages as you can, build projects that other software engineers say are good, get good grades, and hopefully get an internship. I thought that if I became really good at the technical part, everything else would come naturally.

Hi! My name is Jessica, and I'm a Computer Science student at Santa Monica College. I'm also working toward an associate degree in Accounting, which is something I definitely never planned. I started taking accounting because of a friend's suggestion, but it ended up changing the way I think about technology and my future career.

Over the last two semesters, I had the opportunity to visit big tech companies such as Google. Of course, I was excited to learn about technology and see what it was like to work there. But one thing caught my attention more than I expected. The people I enjoyed listening to the most were not only the ones talking about amazing projects. They had the ability to explain ideas, offer insight into answers to questions, and capture the attention of others by creating interest in what they were discussing. This really stopped me in my tracks. Maybe becoming a good engineer is not only about writing good code.

That is why I decided to start this blog. This summer semester, I'm taking my first Business Communication class, and I want to learn more about the skills that don't always get as much attention in STEM. After all, if technical skills help us get the job, what are the skills that help us grow once we're there? That's the question I hope to explore in this blog, along with sharing what I'm learning about communication, business, and everything else that I think is part of becoming a better professional, not just a better programmer.
